Seedlings

There is something truly magical about planting an open-pollinated dahlia seed. Each tiny seed holds the promise of a flower the world has never seen before — a new combination of color, form, and personality waiting to bloom. Unlike tubers that faithfully repeat what came before, seed-grown dahlias are full of surprise and possibility.

From the moment the first seedlings emerge, anticipation builds. Will it be soft pastels or bold jewel tones? Perfectly formed petals or whimsical ruffles?  Waterlily, ball, formal decorative, collarette, single...or something in between?  No two blooms are ever the same, and every plant tells its own story. Some become cherished standouts, future favorites destined for bouquets and gardens alike. Others simply delight for a season — or stay in our gardens never to be released because someone named it and can't part with it (that someone is usually my youngest child).

Dahlia breeding is a blend of patience, curiosity, and joy. It connects us to the rhythm of nature and the wonder of discovery, reminding us that beauty is always evolving. With each seed planted, we become part of the creative process, growing not just flowers, but the future of dahlias themselves. 

So far we have quietly released BB's Buttery Popcorn.  A bright yellow and white informal decorative that brings sunshine and smiles to the garden.
